                                     Israeli Sports in Abu Dhabi
If there’s a moment in Israeli sports we’ll probably remember for many
years to come, it’s this moment: a few minutes after winning the gold
medal, Tal Fliker sings the words to the national anthem, Hatikvah, but
another tune is playing in the background. According to the requirement
by the organizing committee of the Grand Slam judo tournament in Abu
Dhabi, the Israeli team couldn’t present any Israeli marking. But Fliker
and team coach Oren Smadja had other plans, and through the entire day
Fliker, who competes at the weight of sixty six kilograms, showed
remarkable ability on the way to the match for the gold, where he defeated
the Azeri. “All I can say is that I’m very happy for insisting to come here.
With a flag, without a flag, for us this (means) getting the athletes to these
levels, proving to everyone that (you) can’t stop the state of Israel.” The
Israeli flag was supposed to go up on the flagpole today as well when Gili
Cohen won the bronze when defeating the Portuguese Ramos, but Cohen
and her teammates were forced to see the flag of the International Judo
Federation. It was a good day for the Israeli team in Abu Dhabi; tomorrow,
the team hopes, these pictures will be seen again.
