Symbols for Rosh HaShana
On Rosh HaShana there is a custom to eat the “symbols”, food that
symbolizes a blessing for the new year, like apple in honey, a fish’s head
and a pomegranate. Abaye, one of the great sages in the time of the
Talmud, begins this custom. He says that it is important to make a good
symbol on Rosh HaShana because then there is a good blessing on the
entire year. Today there are more modern symbols. In order to make a
symbol, one needs to think of a food that sounds in its name like a specific
blessing in the language that is spoken. How does one do this? (We) take
apple in honey and say: “May there be a good and sweet year!”
