Rain in Eilat
The first rain [system] of fall two thousand sixteen managed to even get
the eternal sunshine city wet. More than thirty millimeters of rain came
down in Eilat in the recent day, more than the average annual amount.
Early in the morning, residents still enjoyed the unusual sight, but it soon
became clear that the draining systems aren’t handling the large amount of
precipitation, and parts of the city became one big lake. Access roads to
hotels in the city were flooded and blocked, as was road ninety towards the
Taba terminal and the border crossing to Sinai. Later the runways at the
city’s airport were also flooded, which caused the stopping of the aerial
activity for several hours. Though the weather will stabilize in the next few
hours and no rain is expected in the city in the next few days, it seems that
tending to the hazards and damaged roads will take a long time still.
