History in Singapore
The world has already seen summit meetings and enemies hugging, but
what happened in Singapore early this morning is unusual. On one hand,
the most unpredictable American President, on the other, a cruel young
dictator, and in the middle the big question – will the agreement they
signed lead to a true reconciliation and disarming North Korea from
nuclear weapons, or be remembered as an on-camera farce. Face to face,
the President of the United States and North Korea’s ruler shook hands
live (on TV). Within a minute, as Trump said, it was obvious that the body
language is optimistic and that the two want this to work. The smiling
attack continued in a one-on-one meeting, an extended lunch, a stroll in the
hotel gardens and a surprising signing of an understanding memo. For the
first time, a North Korean leader and an American leader sign an
ambitious commitment together, to demilitarize all of Korea from nuclear
weapons and work for a peaceful relationship. Civil rights in the
dictatorship were pushed aside. South Korea is happy [lit. blessing], the
whole world is asking how this memo will be implemented on the ground.
