A Big Brother

Dylan hasn’t seen his parents in over a year. They live in Houston with his

big brother, and he (lives) in Israel. At the age of twenty four, during a
Masa Project in Israel, Dylan decided that he wants to enlist to the IDF.

He’s been a tank fighter in the Armored Division for the past year. A has

been living on her own for almost two years, since before she enlisted. She
recently moved in with an adoptive family. Shibli lost three uncles in

Israel’s wars. Even though he isn’t obligated to enlist, and hasn’t talked to
his parents in a long time, it was clear to him that this is his way. Every

weekend they meet, creating an almost incomprehensible friendship.

Shibli, a Bedouin from the north, and Shmuel, a former ultra-orthodox
from Bney Brak who served as a lone soldier in the Artillery Division.

They met through the ‘Big Brother’ NPO, a NPO that connects former

lone soldiers to new recruits, those who can understand close-up the true
difficulties that accompany them. “Ask a lone soldier what he’s really

missing in the worst moments, it’s someone who’ll be there, who I can
share with, talk to him, be happy with him.”
