Item #2 (Advanced Level)
Facebook and Politics
A day after fifty million users of the social network Facebook in the UK
and the United states learned they had been a tool in the hands of the data
analysis company Cambridge Analytica, politicians want answers. A
former senior member of the company, Christopher Wiley, gave an
interview over the weekend and told how Cambridge Analytica took
advantage of the access it got to user accounts on Facebook to analyze
users’ political views and gave the Trump campaign the greatest gift
possible – a victory in the elections for the presidency of the United States.
Facebook CEO is now the man who has to provide explanations for why
he gave Cambridge Analytica access to dig through users’ data, and even
though he knew about it already in two thousand fifteen hasn’t done a
thing until now. The story of Facebook and advertising companies that
harvest users’ information isn’t new. We already know that one Like is
worth a lot of money to the social network, with which it can know what
the user wants and when. But in the case of Cambridge Analytica, it is an
entirely new stage, much more alarming.
