                     When is Lag BaOmer?

Following the turmoil that was caused by pushing back the Lag BaOmer
vacation from Sunday to Monday, the Parents Organization in Jerusalem
suggests a very creative solution today that’s receiving unexpected
support. The solution is to bring the Lag BaOmer vacation earlier to
Friday, so that (they’ll) have the bonfires on Thursday and the Sabbath
won’t be desecrated. Even still, Friday is a short day, the education system
only operates for half a day, most parents don’t work and so a long
vacation day in which the economy works but the education system isn’t,
will be prevented. They write this suggestion to the Chief Rabbi David
Lau. Rabbi David Lau answers, writing them so, “The opinion of his
honorable the Chief Rabbi is that your suggestion to bring the vacation
earlier to Friday is right and worthy.” Israel Elyasaf from the Parents
Organization in Jerusalem: “If (they) accept our suggestion to bring the
Lag BaOmer vacation earlier to Friday and the bonfires to Thursday night,
parents will be satisfied, there will be no Sabbath desecrating, and the
whole economy will save about a billion and a half NIS as a result of
cancelling an entirely unnecessary vacation day. We’re happy that the
Chief Rabbinate supports our offer, and expect the Minister of Education
Naftali Bennett to accept the suggestion, and solve the problem like that.”
