The Templerian Cemetery

Usually, cemeteries are set up outside of the city. However, there is a
unique phenomenon in Jerusalem: It is possible to find cemeteries
inside the city.
The reason for this phenomenon is that Jerusalem was built slowly, so
that if we find a cemetery inside the city, it is a sign that once it was
the edge of the city.
Every cemetery has its stories. At the Templerian cemetery on Emek
Refaim one can also find interesting stories and a lot of history.
Many people think that the “Aliyah people” who came from Europe
are those who built the state. Most people don’t know that before the
“Aliyah people”, in the seventies of the 19th century, German
Christians came to the Land of Israel – the Templers.
They set up settlements, built houses and paved roads.
The time period was difficult, the Templers suffered from different
diseases. Death was everywhere.
In the beginning, the Templers buried the dead in the cemetery on
Mount Zion. Sometime later, fights and conflicts broke out between
the Templers and other groups in the city. The Templers could not
continue to bury (their dead) on Mount Zion.
The Templers decided to set up a cemetery in the German Colony.
Inside the cemetery one can find tombstones that tell the life stories of
children, adults and soldiers. One of the monuments from the time
period of the world war elicited a difficult argument, because it was in
honor of German soldiers.
The place is almost always closed. To succeed in entering it, one must
convince nuns who don’t speak English or Hebrew to open the gate. If
we are lucky, we may succeed in going in…
