History at the Wailing Wall
One might say that the Women of the Wall made history today. After
twenty seven years that they (have been) fighting to get their own plaza at
the Wailing Wall, the government decided today to approve their request.
This is history because for the first time the government acknowledges
other sects in Judaism that aren’t orthodox. The project will cost thirty five
million NIS, in which they’ll build three plazas - women’s section, men’s
section and a mixed section. The ultra-orthodox in the government voted
against (the bill), and the road to a mixed plaza is long still. Until then, the
Women of the wall will continue to pray in the women’s section without a
Torah book or a tallit.
