The Bible Contest Winner
It’s been two months since Sagiv attended school for the last time; he
returned today to nine-one class as the International Bible Contest winner.
It’s been thirty years since the last time a student not from a religious
school won first place. Sagiv, who was a little surprised by all the
attention, actually doesn’t see the win as an unusual event. “It doesn’t
matter if you’re religious or not, if you want to succeed you succeed. I had
motivation, it’s not something I thought about, that I wanted, it just
happened.” The walls in Sagiv’s room are packed with densely written
pages with the most important subjects to study, and on the computer a
software with hundreds of questions, to prepare for any situation. Many
saw the win last night, by a student from a secular public school, as proof
that the Bible continues to be relevant to all of Israel’s residents, and
doesn’t belong to just one group or another of the Israeli mosaic.
Meanwhile, Sagiv clarifies that his plans for the future are different
altogether.
