Celebrating Independence

The President’s lawn hosts this gathering every year, the state dignitaries
and the families of outstanding soldiers. The President couldn’t resist and
sang on stage, though the tradition of state officials singing off key to the
audience’s enjoyment has already stopped. In its place came a new
tradition, an internet chorus video. In the light atmosphere the Minister of
Defense told of the first time he felt like an Israeli. At the heart of the
ceremony are a hundred and twenty one outstanding men and women, one
more than each year, since (they) mistakenly informed one outstanding
person too many and obviously didn’t want to cancel. Among the
outstanding (soldiers) are eleven lone soldiers; an additional surprise
beyond the certificate and pin waited for one of them, his father who came
from Ethiopia to watch him at the ceremony after seven years of not
meeting. In the year when (we) celebrate fifty (years) to the unification of
Jerusalem, President Rivlin didn’t forget to honor Shuli Natan. After the
dignitaries and soldiers left, a whole year is left to water and re-groom this
lawn, towards Israel’s seventieth festivities.
