The Mountains’ Argument – for advanced levels
When God wanted to give the Torah to the Israelies, the Carmel and
Tavor mountains came and appeared before the Creator.
Mount Tavor said: It is nice for the divine presence to rest on me, for I
am higher than all the mountains and the floodwaters haven’t come down
on me!
Mount Carmel: I deserve to merit having the Torah be given on me, for
when the Red Sea split I went and entered the sea, and the Israelites
crossed the sea on me!
God said: You have already been disqualified, for you are conceited.
The mountains said: Will you not give us a reward?
The Creator answered: You will receive your reward, for in the days of
Deborah the prophetess, the Israelites will defeat Sisera’s army on Mount
Tavor. And in the days of Elijah the prophet, the miracle on Mount
Carmel will take place; but for the Giving of the Torah I will choose a
different mountain – Mount Sinai, who is the lowest mountain of you all,
is the one I will choose for the Giving of the Torah.
