The Mountains’ Argument

When God wanted to give the Torah to the Israelites on a
mountain, the Carmel and Tavor mountains came to God.

Mount Tavor said: I am the highest mountain, and that’s why
the Torah should be given on me.

Mount Carmel said: I am an important mountain, because I am
in the Red Sea and the Israelites are walking on me and crossing
the sea – that’s why the Torah should be given on me.

God said to these mountains: You think you are beautiful and
important and that’s exactly why I’m not choosing you for the
Giving of the Torah.

I am choosing a simple, low and modest mountain – Mount
Sinai, upon whom to give the Torah, because the Torah of Israel
is the Torah of all – not just of those who are good, beautiful
and strong.
