The Ten Commandments
In the Book of Exodus, the ‘Jethro’ portion of the Torah talks about how the Israelites
receive the Ten Commandments. The Israelites arrive at Mount Sinai, where they
wash up and become sanctified in order to receive the Torah. The Israelites prepare
for three days and on the third day they hear special sounds, and Moses goes up to
Mount Saini in order to receive the Torah. The Israelites stand, scared and excited to
receive the Torah. Before God gives them the Torah he tells them the Ten
Commandments:
"I am the Lord your G-d, Who brought you out of the land of Egypt.” I am the God
who took the Israelites out of Egypt.
"You shall have no other gods before Me. You shall not make for yourself a graven
image, nor any manner of likeness of any thing.” Only I am your God. Do not make
statues or pictures of other gods.
"You shall not take the name of the Lord your G-d in vain.” God’s name much be
handled with respect. It is forbidden to say God’s name for no reason; one needs an
important reason.
"Remember the Sabbath Day, to keep it holy.” One must keep the Sabbath.
"Honor your father and mother.” One must respect his or her parents.
"You shall not murder.” It is forbidden to murder people.
"You shall not commit adultery.” There are rules as to whom one is allowed to live
with.
"You shall not steal.” It is forbidden to steal.
"You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.” It is forbidden to lie in court.
"You shall not covet your neighbor's house.” It is forbidden to desire things only
because someone else has them.
