The Story of Ruth
During the time when the judges led the Israelites, the most beautiful
story took place. This is the story of a girl named Ruth. Ruth lived in
Moav, whose residents worshipped idols. During that time, in Bethlehem
of Judea, lived a man named Elimelech. He had a woman named Naomi,
and two sons named Makhlon and Kilion. Those years were years of
drought and hunger, and therefore, Elimelech left his house and took his
family to Moav.
Elimelech planned to return to Judea shortly, but he died when he was in
Moav. His two sons married Moabite women. One’s name was Orpah
and the other – Ruth. The two sons died as well, and so Naomi and her
two daughters-in-law remained alone, widows. After ten years in Moav
Naomi heard that God sent Israel much crop, and she got ready to go out
on a long journey back to Bethlehem. Her two daughters-in-law loved her
and wanted to go with her.
“Go back to your mothers’ home,” Naomi said to them. “May God bless
you.” She kissed them good-bye and the three of them cried together.
“You’ve been such a good mother; we’ll go with you and live with you in
your country,” the two young widows said to her. “No, no,” Naomi
replied. “You are young, and I am old. Return to your homes and find
your happiness in your country.”
Orpah kissed Naomi and returned to her people, but Ruth refused to leave
her. “Don’t ask me to go. I will never leave you. Wherever you go, I will
go too. Your people are my people and your God is my God. Only death
will separate you and me.” Naomi realized that Ruth will not change her
mind, and she stopped trying to convince her. The two women continued
together on the way to Bethlehem.
