Ruth’s Reward

Naomi and Ruth arrived in Bethlehem. Naomi’s old friends were happy
to see her again. The period was the beginning of the barley harvest. Ruth
wanted to go out to the fields in order to collect the barley sheaves that
the reapers had left behind them. She and Naomi needed the sheaves in
order to make food, because they were very poor. Ruth arrived at Boaz’s
field, who was a relative of Naomi’s. Boaz was a wealthy and known
man.
Boaz left the city to go visit the reapers. “God be with you,” he said to
them. “God bless you,” the reapers answered him.
“Who is the girl who is gleaning sheaves?” He asked the one responsible
for the reapers.
“That is the girl who had returned with Naomi from the fields of
Bethlehem. She has asked permission to come and glean after the
reapers.”
“Listen to me, my daughter,” Boaz said to Ruth. “I have heard how loyal
you are to your mother-in-law Naomi. You have left your people, who
were idol worshippers, and have come to Canaan to serve God. Stay here
with my girls and don’t go to any other field. When you will be thirsty,
take something to drink from our vessels.”
Ruth bowed down to Boaz and thanked him for his kindness.
At the end of the barley harvest, Boaz made a celebration in the threshing
floor. Naomi commanded Ruth to approach him and say, “You are the
closest relative of my husband and his father Elimelech. Please do us a
favor, for him.” Ruth obeyed and said just that. Boaz fell in love with
Ruth ever since he had seen her, and a short time later he married her.
God gave them a son and they called him Oved. Oved grew up and had a
son named Yishai. Yishai was the father of King David. That is how
Ruth, the young Moabite who chose the Jewish people and their God,
became the great-grandmother of King David.
