Jerusalem Day
The fiftieth anniversary of the unification of Jerusalem got tens of
thousands, mostly members of religious Zionism, out for the traditional
dance of flags. When (we) say “mostly”, these images explain why, and so
pretty much the police hoped this event would run through – colorful,
whimsical, and with a minimal friction with East Jerusalem residents, even
though this year attendants of the parade walked along the old city on a
broader course than previous years. Ceremonies commemorating the
unification of the city were held, full of stories and memories. Even the
Knesset had a special assembly meeting today, with the Prime Minister
strengthened by the atmosphere of Trump’s visit. “I want to clarify, the
Temple Mount and the Western Wall will forever remain under Israeli
rule. The correction of the historic wrongdoing, achieved with the bravery
of our fighters half a century ago, will stand for all eternity.” But not
everyone is talking in terms of liberation and unification today. This way
or another, it’s pretty obvious that the ministers of the government have
learned the media message from now on, especially after President
Trump’s visit.
