Women’s Day
This Thursday will be the International Women’s Day. We’re in the midst
of a historic feminist battle against sexual harassments and the #MeToo
campaign. And still, this coming Independence Day, Israel’s seventieth
birthday, as of now only one woman will stand on the Israel Prize podium.
Yehudit Bronicki got caught in the eye of the prize storm unwillingly,
following the announcement of the winners’ names – almost all but her are
Ashkenazi men. Since two thousand only eighteen women have won the
prize, and out of the six hundred and ninety six prizes given out since
nineteen fifty three until today – only a hundred and five of which have
been awarded to women, almost one in seven. Former State Comptroller
Micha Lindenstrauss previously referred to the prize committee’s election
procedure, one could only speculate that the committee has a male
majority as well. Now only two prizes remain to be given in the next few
days, and perhaps outstanding-enough women would be found. Let’s hope
that next year a story like this would simply be unnecessary.
