Playing in Qatar

Usually when (you) go away with school it’s probably a bus, going as far
as Eilat or the Hermon at most, maybe a flight to Poland. The handball

team from the Katzir school in Holon got much farther than this, to a place

it’s doubtful the Ministry of Education ever planned to visit. The
outstanding handball team, Israel’s schools champion, qualified to the

world championships. As fate would have it, the competition takes place in

Qatar, which doesn’t have diplomatic relations with Israel. The time of
considerations wasn’t easy. Not the entire staff took off eventually, still,

these are sixteen to eighteen year old boys. The delegation arrived in Qatar

where, aside from security, a surprise from the grandiose emirate awaited
them, “The buildings are huge, everything is lit-up, they have the resources

to do these sort of things.” On court, the Israeli pack didn’t come to make
nice, but to work hard and win. The delegation came back to Israel with a

bronze medal, third place in the world, and after the unforgettable trip, the

appetite to continue to excel on court just started.
