                  Purim Gift from Heaven

Rabbi Levi Isaac of Berdichev fills the role of Elijah the prophet

At the end of the Fast of Esther the Jews of

Berdichev gathered in the synagogue to hear

the reading of the Megillah. The synagogue
was filled very quickly. Also upstairs, at the

women's section, the women and girls

gathered to hear the Megillah (of Esther.)

Before they began praying, the clerk came to

the rabbi, Rabbi Levi Isaac, and whispered
something in his ear. The rabbi got up and

                  exited the synagogue.

Rabbi Levi Issac went into his chamber, and there waited for him a

woman holding a rooster. She was not sure whether the rooster

was kosher. Rabbi Levi Isaac looked at the rooster, thought and
said: "The rooster is not kosher and it is forbidden to eat it."

"Rabbi!" – she cried – "Rabbi, with my last penny I bought this
rooster. My husband is very ill and I thought that a little chicken

soup will help him. Also the children wanted to eat some tasty soup.

                  What can I do now?"
"Don't worry, G-d, blessed be He, always helps everyone." The

rabbi wrote down her name and sent her off to hear the reading of
                  the Megillah.

He did not return to the synagogue, but rather went home. At home,
Rabbi Levi Isaac pulled out a white tablecloth and put in it Hallahs,
