4. Possession
This usage is usually a confusing one for English speakers. In English we have a
special verb "to have" to describe possession of something.
In Hebrew we do not have a verb, but use an expression ...ל שֵׁי
Present tense:
I have an apple. פ וּ ַ ח . ֵי שׁ ִל י ַ ת
He has an apple. פ וּ ַ ח . ֵי שׁ וֹל ַ ת
We have an apple. פ וּ ַ ח . וּנ ַ ת ֵי שׁ ָל
She has apples. . םי פ וּ ִ ח הּ ַ ת ֵי שׁ ָל
Past tense:
The verb תוֹי ְה ִל is used according to the subject and not according to the
owner of the subject in one of the following forms:
ה ָ ה ָי ה ָתְיה ָ וּי ָ ה
Examples:
I had an apple. → וּ ַח. פ יל ַ ת הָּי ָּה (The word חוּפּ ת is single, thus הָי ָה)
He had an apple. → . ַחוּפ ַת וֹל הָּי ָּה (The word חוּפּ ת is single, thus הָי ָה)
We had an apple. → . ַחוּפ ַת וּנ ָל הָּי ָּה (The word חוּפּ ת is single, thus הָי ָה)
She had apples (plural). → .םי ִחוּפ ַת הּ ָל וּי ָּה (The word םי ִחוּפּ ת is plural, thus וּי ָה)
*Note: In the past tense the verb וֹית ְ ה ִל is used either in the single or the plural,
masculine or feminine form according to the related subject
