“Mabat” for the Last Time
On regular days, the cue for the TV news starts at two minutes to eight.
But last night, for Channel One’s Mabat show, the headline preceded the
broadcast. Just forty minutes before the Mabat headlines, the
anchorwoman Geula Even received the message on a note. This time it
wasn’t a terror attack, but a dramatic message from the Knesset. The
mythological news show, they were told, will be aired for the last time in a
few minutes. Journalists aren’t used to covering themselves, deliver the
harsh message with the make-up and suit (on). Not just to the public, but
first and foremost inwards, home, into their workplace. How do you put
together into one hour on the air, in which (you’re) supposed to broadcast
as usual, the historic story of the news show that is entwined with the
country’s life – and the cliché in this case is pure truth. Forty nine years on
the air from Romema of the oh-so-familiar face, half a decade of
broadcasting as the only TV channel in Israel, an archive that holds
treasures. After on hour the credits came up the processing phase set in,
which will probably last for a long time.
