Farewell Philip
Nothing in the unveiling ceremony at London’s cricket stadium hinted
what was to come. The rumors about something unusual happening at
Buckingham Palace started at first light, when all of the advising staff was
paged for a nightly meeting. The news for which the UK is preparing is of
course the death of Queen Elizabeth II, which will someday happen. But
this time, after many hours of waiting, the Palace announced that the Duke
of Edinburgh, the ninety five year old Prince Philip of course, is retiring
from public office and won’t take on new commitments after the month of
August. It was important for the royal family to emphasize: though Queen
Elizabeth stands by her husband, she will continue to uphold her tasks as
planned. They’ve been married for seventy years. Philip, a descendant of
Greek Royalty, joined Her Majesty’s Navy in the beginning of World War
II. Elizabeth, thirteen years old at the time, fell in love with him at first
sight. Despite recurring hospitalizations in recent years, Philip still took
part in two hundred and nineteen events just in the last year – more than
William, Kate and Harry combined. The Prince is now sort of retiring,
which reminds us again – blue blood or not, they too are mortal.
