Item #2 (Advanced Level)
Good Neighbors
Four AM; two groups of people, strangers to one another, sharing a
common goal, enemies until yesterday. Most of (these) women are
entering Israel for the first time, for three of them this is a second entrance
or more. (Those) who are responsible for the identity of those coming in
are medical personnel in Syria, those locating, bringing the sick children
together and bringing them here. All those entering are neighbors,
residents of villages up to ten kilometers away from the border, those
controlled by the rebels. Twenty one mothers and twenty three children in
total will come into Israel tonight. They came here under an organization
called “good neighbors association”, which was established almost a year
and a half ago in cooperation with various civil organizations. Israel
transfers food, diesel, generators, medical equipment, water pipes, school
equipment, in fact anything that could promote a normal civil life. Almost
a thousand chronically ill children were treated in Israel, alongside about
three thousand Syrian injured. The rationale is clear – a conscientious and
moral stance alongside a security need. (Someone) whose family or friends
were treated in Israel, will probably change his treatment of the enemy.
