    The Ethiopian Church – ‫ַה ְכ ֵנ ִסּ ָייה ָה ֶא ְתיֹו ִפית‬

English translation

King Solomon, the son of David and Bathsheba gained a lot of respect
and appreciation from kings, nations and animals. He knew how to
speak to people and animals. Everybody respected him for his wisdom.
People came to consult with him and to participate in his big parties.
The parties had a lot of music, wine and pretty women.

People say that one time the wild cock came very late in Solomon's
party. Solomon asked him why he was late and the wild cock answered:
"I went on a visit in a far away land – the land of Sheba (Ethiopia). In
the land of Sheba there is a beautiful and clever queen". This queen had
not heard of King Solomon.

King Solomon wrote a letter to the queen and invited her to come and
visit him in Jerusalem. The queen of Sheba wrote a reply letter and
answered she could come only 3 years later.
After 3 years the queen of Sheba came to Jerusalem to King Solomon's
palace. The palace was made of glass, but the queen, thinking it was
water, raised her dress and went gently towards the king. The king
laughed about it very much.
Solomon and the queen spoke and the queen asked Solomon very
clever riddles. King Solomon fell in love with the beautiful and clever
Queen of Sheba and gave her expensive gifts and lands in Jerusalem.
The legend says that out of this love their son – Menelik was born.

In 1893 Menelik's sons came to Jerusalem and built a church on a hill
outside the walls of the Old City (on Ethiopia Street). They named the
church "The mountain of Eden". On the church's gate there is a sign
with a painting of a lion and writing in Amharic language ""…the Lion
of the tribe of Judah… hath prevailed…".
