The Book of Deuteronomy – ‫חומש דברים‬ 24

                  Torah Portion Ekev

In Torah portion Ekev there is a verse:

"You shall teach them to your children to speak in them, when you sit
in your house and when you walk on the way, and when you lie down
and when you rise up." (Devarim 11:19)

A Jew once came to the "Chafetz Chaim" – Rabbi Israel Meir of Radin – and
told him that he was the richest of the rich and that he had much wealth and
possessions and he did not lack anything in life.

The "Chafetz Chaim" told him: "If you have, with the help of God, reached
wealth and comfort like these, it would be appropriate that you would dedicate
each day time to learning Torah. Our Sages said that learning Torah is
equivalent to all the commandments."

The Jew was surprised by the suggestion of the "Chafetz Chaim" and said:
"How can I learn Torah each day? After all, I have so many business affairs and
I need to dedicate to them all the hours of the day!"

"If such is the matter," said the "Chafetz Chaim",
"Then you are the poorest of the poor!
If you have no free time – what do you have?"

And the "Chafetz Chaim" added: "There is no greater shortage, than shortage of
free time…"
