The Book of Deuteronomy – חומש דברים 54
Torah Portion Nitzavim
Torah portion Nitzavim opens with the verse:
"You are standing today, all of you, before God your God: your heads,
your tribes, your elders and your officers, every man of Israel." (29:9)
It is interesting to note that in this entire Torah portion, Moshe speaks to the
nation of Israel in the plural, like the opening verse and so too the rest of the
verses in this Torah portion.
But only in two verses Moshe speaks to the nation in the singular:
"To make you pass through the covenant of God your God and
through His oath that God your God is making with you today. In
order to establish you today to Him as a nation and He will be to you a
God like He spoke to you and like He swore to your forefathers, to
Avraham, to Yitzchak and to Yaakov." (29:11-12)
The author of the "Kli Yakar" explains:
Moshe wants to guide the nation of Israel to join in unity to one nation and to
feel mutual responsibility one towards the other, according to the principle:
"All Israel are responsible for each other."
When the individual fails in something – it affects not only him, but also the
people of Israel.
