The Noga Compound
[Always] whenever (people) talk about Jaffa, (they) think about the
flea market, the port and the old city.
Here, at the Noga Compound, there is nothing ancient. (They) built
the oldest houses in the compound 90 years ago (in Jaffa - 90 is
young!).
At first, British army offices were in the neighborhood, and British
army and government officials who were in the country during the
mandate (period) lived there. The architectural style in the
neighborhood is modern, and next to the office [work] buildings there
are residential buildings (designed) in the Bauhaus style.
For many years the neighborhood had been neglected, but in the year
2000, students, young couples and artists arrived. Why did they come
particularly to Noga? Because it was very expensive (to live) in Neve
Tzedek… When the municipality saw that the neighborhood had
potential – it began giving the place funds. Today the streets are a
little nicer, and at Segula Square there is a very sweet playground.
Nowadays it is expensive in the Noga neighborhood as well, and all
of the youngsters and artists need to find a new home.
Where do you think they are going to live?
