T he American - German Colony in Jaffa
Between Jaffa and Tel Aviv there is a strange little neighborhood.
There aren’t many vehicles there, and all of the houses are (made) of
wood. It’s a strange sight in modern Tel Aviv. What is this place’s
story?
The story starts and ends within two years, 150 years ago, between
1866 and 1868. In the state of Maine in the United States a church
called Christ Church was established, and George Adams [stood] as
its head - a priest and an actor, but more of an actor than a priest. He
was very charismatic.
A lot of people followed Adams when he promised them that the
Land of Israel was Paradise. They believed that the end of the world
was coming, and that (they) should immigrate to Israel. Because of
the priest’s charisma, 157 people took a long and dangerous trip from
Maine in America to Jaffa in Israel. All of their belongings were with
them: Big agricultural tools, pianos and even wooden houses.
As soon as they arrive, the troubles begin. The Turks didn’t let them
settle [lit: sit] on the land they bought, and they sit by [lit. on] the sea,
far from the city. They don’t know that underneath the sand is a
cemetery of many people who die from a cholera epidemic a year
earlier. The new immigrants get the disease and nine men and
children die in the very first days.
After they build the houses they realize that wooden houses are too
hot and aren’t good for the Land of Israel. Their tools were very
modern but they didn’t know how to grow olives and wheat.
The worst thing is that George Adams lied all the time and took their
money for himself. After two very difficult years in Israel the last (of
the) Americans went back to Maine. They returned with no money,
sick and tired.
A few years later, Templers came to Tel Aviv and. They bought the
neighborhood houses and renovated them. The Templers built the
Emmanuel Church in the neighborhood. The Church has a special
roof, which stands out.
