Young Children in Israel
In Israel there are currently about six hundred thousand children under the
age of three. Only twenty three percent of these are in government
supervised daycares, which means a hundred and forty thousand children.
This means four hundred and sixty thousand children in unsupervised
daycares – some of which, as we’ve seen in recent days, are just lawless.
Back in two thousand twelve the government already committed to
building four hundred daycares. Six years later and only three hundred
were built, even those in the last year. This means more than a hundred
daycares are missing. This way (we) get to a situation where for each spot
there are about fifteen to thirty contenders, most parents by the way, don’t
try to apply – they don’t stand a chance anyway. The main bill calls to
supervise all nurseries and daycares. Personnel would be trained and have
to provide hiring permits. This bill, which is three years old already,
passed through the ministerial committee, this week it was brought on the
agenda again, but it was decided to postpone deliberations over it because
of a disagreement between the Ministries of Treasure and Social Affairs.
And actually as usual, money is the whole story, the cost of budgeting the
bill is almost a billion NIS, when it’s obvious to everyone – the ideal
situation is mandatory education from birth, but that’s beyond all
imagination.
