The World Cup in Russia
For the first time in who knows how many years, today Russia presents the
world with smiling images of a celebration. Neither Syria nor Chechnya,
no human rights and no drugs in sports – pure sports. With no regards to
the results on the grass, this was exactly Putin’s purpose, who hosted a
festive gala last night in the Red Square – to bring the big celebration to
his home and prove to the west, and especially the British who lost the
contest to him and remain disgruntled, that he can (do it) just like they can
if not better. It cost him and the oligarchs about fifteen billion dollars,
pocket change in contrast with what the Winter Olympics in Sochi cost.
The opening game actually called a meeting for Putin with the Americans’
allies, and the Saudis enjoyed every second in Moscow and allowed
themselves to let go. The Russians’ celebration will last a whole month,
probably a little less for their team. Tomorrow the celebration will leave
Moscow and spread out to bigger areas of the country that’s hosting the
World Cup for the first time in its history.
