When Herzl Meets Ehad Ha'am

Near Neve Tzedek, in the heart of Ahuzat Bayit and under the Kol-Bo

Shalom building, Herzl meets Ahad Ha'Am.

Herzl is an important man. He has a big idea: a state only of Jews; a

home for the Jewish people. Herzl thinks and works very hard. Herzl

says that there is no time. One needs to build a home for the Jews in

Europe quickly.

In 1898, Herzl travels to Israel to meet the German emperor. He wants

to ask for help to build a home in Israel. The emperor doesn't want to

help and tells Herzl to make an appointment [schedule] with the

Turkish Sultan. The Sultan can help, but he wants a lot of money.

Herzl returns to Europe, to make an appointment with the British. The

British say that they can give the Jews Uganda in Africa. Herzl thinks

that maybe a country in Uganda is good. What do you think?

Asher Zvi Ginsburg comes to Israel from Ukraine. He too is an

important man with great ideas, but he doesn't want respect, so he says

that his name is 'Ehad Ha'am'. 'Ehad Ha'am' is a regular person, like all

people. Ehad Ha'am says that the Little Person is the Country, and that

the Country is the Little Person. He writes an important book, '[The]

Spiritual Zionism', where he writes that the State of the Jews is not

just a home. It is also a school; a school of culture and of spirit, that

people from all over the world can come to learn and give an example

to people in the world.
