Item #2 (High-Intermediate Level)
Israeli Spirulina
For many years the Bet She’an Valley (has been) breeding fish, but in
recent years farmers are realizing that if they want to continue to work in
agriculture they have to think of something else, more modern. Six
settlements in the Bet She’an Valley worked hard in order to build the
biggest spirulina farm in Europe. Spirulina is a very healthy algae, a super-
food. It’s also worth a great deal of money. After a long process and plenty
of checks under a microscope, (you) can grow spirulina and find it in many
restaurants and in shakes. It isn’t easy for farmers in Israel to make a living
today, and (those) who want to continue working at this have to take the
agriculture they know and make it agriculture that’s still relevant in the
twenty first century.
