Binyan Hitpa'el – Past Tense

In Binyan Hitpa’el we omit the infinitive form prefix ְל, while

maintaining the sound pattern of the infinitive form:

ם ֵד ַק ְתה ִ ← ם ֵד ַק ְתה ְל ִ

And that's it! This basic sound pattern already sounds like the name of

the Binyan – Hitpa'el:

HIT...A...E...

To this basic "kernel" we add the corresponding suffixes according to

the pronoun. As an example let’s use the verb:

to progress - ם ֵד ַק ְת ִהְל

ם ֵד ַק ְתה ִ ← ם ֵד ַק ְת ִהְל

Suffix וּ ם ֵה ה ִ ה י א אוּה

+ וּ מ ְ ד ַק ְת ִה ה+ מ ְ ד ַק ְת ִה ם ֵד ַק ְת ִה
Suffix  מ וּ ְ ד ַק ְת ִה ה ָ מ ְ ד ַק ְת ִה ם ֵד ַק ְת ִה

Note that the kernel for אוּה is different than the kernel for ִהיא and ם ֵה.

For the second chart, we use a slightly different “kernel”:
