After long months of deliberations, some turbulent, the Ministry of
Health’s committee for healthy nutrition regulation submitted its
conclusion to Minister of Health Litzman today. The main and most
important recommendation is marking unhealthy products in this manner:
in January two thousand eighteen, solid food products will be marked with
a red warning label when in a hundred grams of them there’s more than
eight hundred milligrams of sodium, or twenty two and a half grams of
sugar, or six grams of saturated fat. The drinks marked with a red warning
will be the ones where in a tenth of a liter of drink there’s more than a
hundred milligrams of sodium, or six grams of sugar, or three grams of
saturated fat. The meaning (of this) – foods that are an inseparable part of
all our lives, like regular sliced cheese, ketchup, various sausages and
regular sugary drinks will be marked with a red, noticeable warning label,
as opposed to healthy foods, like light bread, skim cheese and even the
popular snack Bamba, which will be marked with a green label.
“McDonald’s – out. (You) shouldn’t eat McDonald’s.” When Litzman said
this about seven months ago, McDonald’s cried out to argue that they’re
actually the ones making tremendous effort to sell healthy food. Today it
turned out that indeed the products at McDonald’s, at least most of them,
meet the Ministry of Health’s requirements for the healthy green label.
