What to Wear to Work?
This is what the entrance to the Israeli Knesset looked like today: (female)
parliamentary advisors delayed at the entrance, all in skirts, in protest of
the customary dress code, which forbids women from choosing their
skirts’ length themselves. The turmoil was caused after a delay in the entry
of parliamentary advisor Shaked Hasson last Sunday, after which the
Knesset asked to revise the standard dress codes. The protest here was
covered in media worldwide, but do other countries have such a dress
code? In the British Parliament (they have been) discussing changing the
dress code for some time, following an incident that occurred [there] less
than a year ago. With British curtesy the speech of Parliament Member
Caroline Lucas was stopped after she wore a t-shirt, which isn’t
parliament-appropriate. But the UK is a conservative and reserved country,
in many places in the world (people) think there’s no need for a dress code
at all. Meanwhile in Israel, Knesset Chairman Yuli Edelstein instructed the
creating of a team to look into the dress code, while maintaining the need
for dignified apparel at the Knesset.
