Mother and Prime Minister
“Madam Prime Minister, congratulations! It’s a girl!” Jacinda Ardern,
Prime Minister of New Zealand, became a mother for the first time this
morning at the age of thirty seven, and as expected now she obviously told
of this on social media, but not just to (her) family and close friends, but to
all of the country’s (male and female) citizens. This is just the second time
in modern history that a prime minister gives birth during her term in
office. In nineteen ninety it was Benazir Bhutto, Prime Minister of
Pakistan at the time, who gave birth to her daughter while still in office.
Ardern, who invited the press home herself to announce her pregnancy,
realized she can channel the great curiosity to a positive influence on
women’s status, who every day integrate a career and motherhood in a
society where this still isn’t obvious. The Prime Minister now left for a
six-week maternity leave, during which she’ll continue to be updated in
the day-to-day of state matters, between feeding and diapering.
