Item #1 (Advanced Level)
On the Road All Day
Ordinary residents, who have never participated in demonstrations,
decided to take matters into their own hands; go out to the streets and fight
(against) the urban plan, which according to them ignores the traffic jams
in their neighborhoods. It all started in Kfar Saba; Mirit Shaked-Barak, a
concerned citizen who discovered the new urban plan by chance,
according to which dozens of new (residential) towers are supposed to be
built in the neighborhood where she lives, and the meaning is clear –
thousands of more residents and cars that will cause traffic jams and
mostly hurt quality of life. During the fight the residents managed, they
learned that they are not alone in this story. The urban protest in Kfar Saba
quickly became a national phenomenon, from Nahariya to Ofakim. And
thanks to this uniformity, residents were able to chalk down quite a few
achievements: in Herzliya they were able to quash the urban plan, in
Kiryat Ono they brought down the number of apartments, in Hod
Hasharon they stopped construction and in Kfar Saba residents won the
motion, too. Residents will most likely continue to fight, and they probably
won’t solve the traffic jams crisis. The question asked is - whether to solve
one problem, we’ve caused another.
