The Cable Car Museum
During the years 1948-1967, after the War of Independence,
Jerusalem was divided into the Jordanian side and the Israeli
side. Between the Jordanian side and the Israeli side passed a
border.
The entire Old City was on the Jordanian side, but in one place –
Mount Zion – there were Israeli soldiers. The soldiers were
isolated on the Jordanian side. They needed to receive from
Israel weapons, food and medical equipment. Sometimes they
needed to evacuate wounded soldiers to an Israeli hospital.
The problem was that the Jordanians fired all the time on Mount
Zion. Therefore, it was very hard to bring equipment or to
evacuate the wounded. What could they do?
A young Israeli thought of a good solution: to build a cable car.
In the cable car they transferred equipment to the Israeli
soldiers, and evacuated wounded from Mount Zion to a hospital.
The cable car worked only at night, and in the day they lowered
the cable to the ground.
The cable car worked for half a year and the Jordanians did not
know! Also among the Israelis, only a few people knew about
the cable car until 1972.
A few years ago, an acrobat from Paris arrived in Israel. He
heard about the history of the cable car and walked on a cable of
his own from the Cable Car Museum to the Old City!
Today, there is in the place a small museum – the Cable Car
Museum. In the museum, it is possible to see the cable car and
to read about its history.
