The Sultan's Pool
In the years 1517-1917, the Turks ruled in Israel.
One of the Turkish sultans was the Sultan Suleiman. Suleiman
built many things in Jerusalem. He built the wall of the Old
City that you see today.
One of the big things that he built was the Sultan's Pool.
The Sultan's Pool was a very large reservoir, and with a depth of
more than 10 meters. The Sultan closed off the water in the
pool with a dam.
Above the pool, the Sultan built a drinking fountain. The
drinking fountain it is possible to see until today.
Today, there is no water in the pool, but there is in it a big
amphitheater for performances.
Every summer, there is in the pool a special festival – the
"Jerusalem International Arts and Crafts Fair" Festival.
In this festival there are beautiful exhibitions from all over the
world. There are also good performances of Israeli musicians
for an inexpensive price.
Aside from the amphitheater, there is in the pool also a large
area of grass, and many people come there to make picnics.
