The Giro in Israel
It’s going to be the biggest sporting event that ever took place in Israel.
One of the biggest bicycle races in the world, Giro d’Italia, lands in the
holy land. Millions of viewers every day, a hundred and ninety four
countries where the race will be aired, six thousand police officers and
security personnel, a thousand and two hundred crew members working
around the clock, four hundred and ten kilometers of bicycle trails from
Haifa to Eilat. A hundred and seventy six riders from twenty two countries
are competing, from the United States, France, Italy, Germany, Australia,
even riders from Bahrein and the United Emirates will come, and for the
first time there’s even an Israeli representation, two riders: Guy Sagiv and
Guy Niv. On Friday the race will be started at Yizhak Kariv St. in
Jerusalem near the old city, on Saturday competitors will ride a path of a
hundred and sixty one kilometers from the Sammy Ofer stadium in Haifa
to Tel Aviv. On the last day of the race in Israel the third leg will begin –
two hundred and twenty nine kilometers from Be’er Sheva to Eilat. After
they reach Eilat, the race’s participants will leave Israel and continue it
around Italy until the finish at the Vatican on May twenty seventh. It’s
really worth it to go out to the roads and cheer here in Israel, feel a part of
an experience that never happened in Israel.
