Page 3 - getting Lacrosse across
P. 3
In a web article I read on (Lacrosse Scoop, 2015) The Native Americans played the
game largely to appeal to their creator as a means to solve issues between the
diverse tribes. French explorer Jean Brebeuf came across the war like sport the
Native Americans were playing and renamed it “Lacrosse” in his 1636 writings.
(CatholicSaints.info, 2021)
European settlers adopted the Jean Brebeuf version as a sport and started betting
on local teams. The game eventually made its way to the United States in early
1800’s. A very big event in the sports history was the founding of the first Lacrosse
organizations in Canada called Montreal Lacrosse Club in 1856.One year later the
very first Lacrosse match with fixed set of rules and equipment was played, this
marks the birth of the present-day version of the sport.
