Ketchikan
11 September 2018
The arched sign across the street proclaims:
“Welcome to Alaska’s First City, Ketchikan, The Salmon Capitol of the World.”
What a magical feeling to wake up and realize we were docked in Ketchikan! When we went to bed, we were
at sea. When we awoke, we were practically on Water Street! Ketchikan gets 152 inches of rain per year! (That
is nearly 13 feet of rain!) Many people told us how lucky we were as we didn’t experience a single drop of rain
during our visit to Ketchikan.
Conferees selected their own activities at Ketchikan and other ports of call. Some of the activities that were
shared for this report are highlighted over the next several pages.
Great Alaskan Lumberjack Show
The show explained how trees are cut, the apparatus to deliver the trees down the mountains, and how the logs
are guided down the rivers. There is a lot of science and physics involved in the timber business.
Lumberjacks are athletes in their own right. Did you know there are competitive college lumberjack teams?
There are also professional competitions. All the men in the show in Ketchikan are champions in some event.
