A Gold Rush Saloon Experience.
A reenactor “madam”, dressed in period
dress, drove a mini-bus up a mountain to a
lookout point. There was a beautiful view
of the scenery, the town below, and the
ships in the harbor. During the short ride,
she told stories of Skagway’s colorful his-
tory.
At the tavern, the infamous “Soapy” Smith
(reenacted by her real-life husband) greet-
ed the group. He entertained with stories
and songs. With “Soapy’s” help, each per-
son in the audience prepared several liba-
tions of the period. (Non-alcoholic ver-
sions could also be made.)
“Soapy” Smith swindled naïve prospectors.
One of his schemes was to charge $5 to
send a telegram to folks back home. No
telegram message ever left Skagway.
The prospectors endured unbelievable hardships. Very few
struck it rich. Many died. Most only had an adventure to
relate years later to their grandchildren!
