Jay Petsko: What's good in the Seven
Spherez Camp?
Seven Spherez: Everything is good right now,
bro. We are soon to release our new album
' B o o m B a p x Ti m b o B o o t s ' t h r o u g h
www.Thatshiphopmusic.com, the second
installment of the BoomBap trilogy. Following
the success of 'BoomBap x Baseball Bats,' we
decided to give the fans more of what they are
crying out for…real hip hop. We have plenty of
authentic, vintage-style BoomBap tracks on the
way and a high-energy live set that is moving
crowds every time we perform. We recently
rocked the stage alongside Jedi Mind Tricks at
their sell-out show in London, which was dope,
and opened up for the likes of Mobb Deep, Onyx,
Snowgoons, to name but a few. We are set to
perform live with Yassin Bey (Mos Def) and Gza
(Wu-Tang) over the next couple of weeks and are planning a European tour over the
coming months. We've had features on Canibus' last couple of official album releases, 'Full
Spectrum 2' and 'Full Spectrum Dominance 3,' and will be featured on the forthcoming
'Repolarisation' album landing this week. Also, check out the recent single we dropped
featuring Chris Rivers, 'Desert Eagle,' taken from the 'BoomBap x Baseball Bats' album.
There's an official video on YouTube, too, which is pretty dope. We are focusing on quality
and consistency right now and expanding awareness of Seven Spherez to a wider global
audience. Watch this space!
JP: What is the most overrated and underrated hip hop out today?
SS: Without naming and shaming any specific impostors, this whole mumble rap wave
that's been adopted into the movement is clearly the most overrated. When the beat
sounds like your 4-year-old daughter could have made it on her toy keyboard and the
'rapper' sounds like he's on a comedown from a long heroin binge yet it's clocking up
millions of views, you have to take a step back and see it for what it is…overrated trash. We
live in a time where talent is overlooked, and numbers are all that matters. You could be
mumbling ‘3 Blind Mice’ over an 808 loop and as long as it goes viral, you'll be taking
bookings for high-ticket festivals and have majors throwing cash at you. The game’s crazy
right now. As always, the real talent, unfortunately, gets overlooked a lot of the time. There
are a lot of dope emcees and producers knocking out quality hip hop, but it seems to stay
underground. I think consistency is key to success for the underdog artist -- the minute you
take your foot of the gas, you can be forgotten about.
