Marty Haviik: Thank you Doug for giving me this time to talk to you about the band and about
the new EP ‘The Lockdown Sessions.’ I have so much to ask, but I know that you and I are
limited on time – so, I’ll just jump right in. First of all, congratulations on another awesome
EP. The EP was released on July 17th on the German label SPV, correct?
Doug Aldrich: Thanks! We just made these videos for during the lockdown and then they decided
th
to turn those videos into an EP. I guess it did come out on the 17 . SPV has been involved with The
Dead Daisies for a long time. They’re a great group of guys and they worked well with The Daisies.
We got a German team that works closely with them.
MH: Did you guys plan on going to the studio with songs in mind already?
DA: No, not really. We did it individually. We recorded it, basically, with iPhones, so it was very half-
hazard, not planned in any way. So, we put the audio together after everyone recorded their own
parts, and with the video, it would be chopped up by the video director, whoever that may be. But
the audio, we put together. Glen would record his guitar and vocals and then I would record my
guitar on top of Glen, and so forth. It was all done with iPhones, but the audio sounded really good
after it was mixed. And after that, they decided to put it out.
MH: So, was the video recorded with the Zoom app?
DA: No, it’s like I said, it was recorded with the video and audio at first, and everyone did it in one
take, you know? You couldn’t fix anything after recording. We did get some great versions from the
recordings… ‘30 Days In The Hole,’ for example. We got several different versions. The other song
‘Unspoken’ is straight acoustic and ‘Righteous Days’ has a little bit different groove. So, it’s all good.
MH: So, this is where I make you think bit, and correct me if I’m wrong…The Dead Daisies
have 4 studio albums, 4 EPs, including the brand-new ‘Lockdown Sessions,’ and a live album
under your belts. That’s quite an achievement in such a short time.
DA: I’m…I’m gonna take your work for it. LOL!
MH: And for our readers, just so they know, The 4 tracks on ‘The Lockdown Sessions’ are
‘Unspoken,’ ‘Righteous Days,’ ‘30 Days In The Hole,’ a Humble Pie cover, and ‘Fortunate
Son,’ a Creedence Clearwater Revival tune. I was reading that Deen Castronovo was on lead
vocals for ‘Fortunate Son.’
DA: Yes, Deen’s got a great voice, man.
MH: Tell me about Glen Hughes and how he came on board with the band.
DA: Glen and I worked together in 2015. John Corabi and Marco Mendoza were going to do some
solo work and the management started discussing with Glen about the possibility of playing bass
and singing. Glen was very excited about that possibility and they asked me what I think. I said that
if you get Glen, it’s going to be amazing. I’ve worked with Glen, like I said, on tour, and it was some
of the best jams ever, you know? Glen is a super-powerful singer but he’s an amazing bass player,
too. So, we got a record that is coming out next year (it’s coming out January) that is called ‘Holy
Ground,’ with 11 tracks. It’s really an amazing record. We’re really excited about the fans hearing it.
So, ‘Unspoken’ and ‘Righteous Days’ are on that record. They were just kinda part of the album.
The singles are going to start coming out around September and then we’ll start with the real singles
coming out in December, prior to the album coming out.
