The show kicked things off with a fun video featuring multiple Hollywood
stars saying Rick’s name, which helped build the crowd’s excitement for
who they were about to see. A masterful showman, Springfield is a
veteran of stage and screen. Springfield first achieved “heartthrob
status” with his television role as Dr. Noah Drake on the long-running
soap opera General Hospital. Tonight, the consummate performer
commanded the stage -- proving that this seventy-year-old rocker still
has it. He performed some of his newer songs like “Light This Party Up”
and “Little Demon,” as well as some fan favorites like “Don’t Talk to
Strangers” and “I’ve Done Everything for You.” And of course, he
finished off the night with his hit Grammy-winning song “Jessie’s Girl,”
which had the crowd singing along at the top of their lungs.
What an incredible evening! A night that I thought was going to be a
canceled show instead turned out to be magical. Whether you are a
longtime fan or someone who has never seen Rick perform, I highly
recommend that you experience Rick Springfield in concert. It was a
definite highlight of my summer and one that I will not soon forget. I am
confident that many from the crowd would share my sentiment.
As a side note, I have had a connection with Rick almost my entire life.
My uncle gave me my first vinyl record back in the 80s, which happened
to be “Working Class Dog” by Rick Springfield. I used to spin it on my
Fisher Price record player. That song helped shape me and got me
through some sad times -- like when my girlfriend moved away during
my fifth-grade summer. To be able to cover this show and take photos
of Rick was almost like my life has come full circle.
I guess in a way, it would be fitting to say, “Rick Springfield…you
complete me.” ☺
