Throughout their show, Donny & Marie switched back and forth performing solo hits and then coming back
together as a team…and again, solo…and together again. While performing their many hits, the screen
behind them displayed video clips of them growing up and the many artists the duo have performed with
over their substantial careers…Andy Williams, Michael Jackson, Prince, and of course, their brothers The
Osmonds, to name a few.
During Marie’s first solo set she mentioned she had a “weird” voice and could sing in many different styles.
She has proven that throughout her music career, scoring tons of country and pop hits, but also flirting with
R&B, traditional pop and even classical styled music. Tonight, she additionally threw a few rock-style tunes
in the mix. In one head-scratching musical moment, she sported a sequined Stetson hat, glittery boots and
a duster, with a guitar slung over her shoulder. She then effortlessly performed "Walk This Way" by
Aerosmith -- which somehow morphed into Nancy Sinatra's "These Boots Are Made For Walkin',” clearly
demonstrating her ability to switch music genres effortlessly. And who else but Marie could tackle Aerosmith
one minute and then offer a haunting, completely committed "Nessun Dorma" the next? She also did a
collection of Broadway songs that kicked off with "Getting to Know You" from "The King and I." Once she
began singing that song, I understood why there was a room divider with Asian flourishes waiting on the side
of the stage, as it was soon trotted out to allow the leading lady to do some quick costume changes. Marie
rivals Cher when it comes to number of outfits worn per show.
Marie performed her most emotionally resonant moment with "Baby You're Crazy," her country-pop ballad
from her 2016 album "Music is Medicine." An accompanying video showed images of her two weddings to
Stephen Craig, whom she married in 1982 and again in 2011. It was touching, and her introduction to the
song was sweetly sincere.
Marie was unpredictable throughout the show. She talked about the Arizona heat and just how hot it was.
Then she dropped to her knees in a sequined gown and said she had to acknowledge "my favorite fan." She
then she grabbed one of the small electric fans in front of her and brought it to her face. Cheesy, yes, but for
Marie, it works. She exudes charm and quirkiness.
