Akron, Ohio’s Red Sun Rising was formed in 2006 when high school
classmates Mike Protich (vocals/guitar) and Ryan Williams (guitar)
struck up a casual conversation about music at a local gas station.
By 2007, Red Sun Rising's line-up was solidified, and they were out
playing local gigs.
Akron, Ohio has spawned such notables as The Black Keys, Devo,
and Chrissie Hynde -- and Red Sun Rising is slated to soon join that
illustrious list of area rockers who are making a mark. Their growing
notoriety can be partly attributed to due to these veteran rock road
warriors’ extensive touring and also, their ability to nurture and
develop a devoted fan base.
The band has released two studio albums through their label, Razor
& Tie. “Polyester Zeal” came out in 2015, featuring the singles “The
Otherside” and “Emotionless.” Both songs from this debut album
attained number 1 slots on the Mainstream Rock chart -- a feat that
has only been previously accomplished by the California rock band
Trapt. “Polyester Zeal” was followed in March of 2018 with the band’s
second album, “Thread.”
Red Sun Rising often utilizes the hashtag #WeAreThread, which
references their genre of music, stating that their influences can be
likened to “thread in a fabric” and that their sound cannot be
aligned with one particular genre.
Red Sun Rising is no stranger to ION Indie Magazine, having
appeared in our pages in the past. This time, it was Senior
Photojournalist Daniel Johnson who caught up with them. Johnson
doubled-down with his lens -- first capturing the band at the Xfinity
Center in Massachusetts this past Summer and recently, he caught
up with RSR at Wally’s Pub in New Hampshire.
Besides Protich and Williams, members of Red Sun Rising include
Dave McGarry (guitar/vocals), Ricky Miller (bass/vocals), and Pat
Gerasia (drums).
