Andrew Hozier-Byrne, AKA Hozier, is an Irish artist who is the son of a
local blues musician who hails from Bray, Ireland. He joined his first
band at the age of 15 and found his influences in such performers as
Leonard Cohen, John Lee Hooker, and also, choral groups. His single
“Take Me To Church,” a blues/gospel/pop song which addresses gay
discrimination in the Catholic Church, went viral on YouTube after
appearing on the front page of Reddit. “Take Me To Church” was later
nominated at the 57th Annual Grammy Awards for “Song of the Year”
in 2015.
After years of touring extensively and promotional appearances to
promote “Take Me To Church,” he dropped his most recent offering in
September of 2018, a 4-song EP titled "Nina Cried Power", featuring the
title track as a single which is a collaboration with soul legend, Mavis
Staples.
Senior Photojournalist Daniel Johnson captured these intriguing and
dynamic images of Hozier for a rare appearance at the House of Blues
in Boston, MA.
